Great Exhibition of the North: 360 VR promo

Few large-scale events pack the prestige of the Great Exhibition of the North, a £5m initiative to highlight the North of England’s art, design and innovation. NewcastleGateshead Initiative knew its bid had to be special - and therefore brought Shaun Allan, now our Director of Immersive Technologies, on board.

With just three weeks to provide a solution, Shaun settled on 360 VR supported by 3D modelling, then spent a fortnight filming landmarks, flying a drone along the Tyne and collecting footage of performances from the likes of Fatboy Slim. The following week he dedicated to editing this together to offer a flavour of the region as well as logistical data.

The pitch itself was conducted using Samsung GearVR headsets, which he gave to the judges along with instructions on how to activate them to sync with the external audio. The approach worked perfectly. Within seconds, the judges were immersed – and, of course, NGI soon learned it had won.
