hedgehog lab are proud of the culture they have built across global offices and it’s all thanks to the amazing team. This meet the team series has been curated by one of our newest team members, Kathryn Wharton.

Meet the team: Marc Cullen

Hello, I’m Marc and joined the hedgehog lab team in April 2020 as a senior developer. As a full-stack developer with experience in APIs my area of expertise is with React and front end web development. In my short time here I have already supported projects with Deliveroo and AkzoNobel. As a self-taught developer, I was attracted to hedgehog lab by the diverse client portfolio and the range of tech used to find the right solutions for the client. I also have skills in design and video editing which I develop in my personal time.

I have built up my extensive experience through working as a contractor, winning projects within the banking and building industries and working with high profile clients from the airline and healthcare sectors at another North East agency. Prior to joining the team, I took a nine-month career break and went travelling with my wife to far-flung places including the Americas and Oceania.

I broke into the sector without going to university, which I think is important to emphasise because to become a developer there are many different career paths you can take. Alongside studying for an NVQ in IT and working full time, I developed websites to support the family business and build valuable experience. I believe that as well as having the technical experience being good at problem-solving and having a willingness to learn are key attributes for developers. Having the ability to prove your talent and skills to potential employers is critical.

For anyone interested in pursuing a career as a developer I would recommend checking out Code Academy for free coding opportunities and Stack Overflow to connect with like-minded individuals. I also recommend taking advantage of the plethora of tutorials and videos on YouTube.
