Ever heard of the Hedgehog Concept? It’s an idea presented in Jim Collins’ book Good to Great that successful companies nail down three crucial things: Passion, Excellence, and their Economic Engine. The concept can be applied to individuals to help identify our unique strengths and how we can align our work with our passions. Naturally, I got curious about how these relate to me and my role.
User Experience
In the world of User Experience (UX) research, passion is the force behind impactful discoveries and insights. I’ve always been that inquisitive kid who asked all the questions, so I’m all about unraveling the ‘why’ behind user behaviours. User interviews aren’t just a Q&A session; they’re an opportunity to connect with users and understand the underlying reasons behind their preferences and frustrations. It’s about empathetically connecting with users, gaining their trust, and digging into the contextual nuances that shape their decisions.
This passion for ‘why’ is what allows me to bridge the gap between user insights and actionable product improvements. And that is why throughout my career, I’ve built a reputation for delivering insights that go beyond numbers and statistics, that inspire user-centred design.

Excellence is where you determine your core strengths and what sets you apart from others. For me, it’s not just about talking to as many users as possible. I’ve honed my skills to craft questions that go beyond surface-level responses, digging into the underlying motivations and emotions that shape user experiences. It’s not enough to know that users prefer one feature over another— it’s back to understanding why and providing context.
In my role, excellence means delivering insights that spark real change. Whether it’s influencing product design, refining user journeys, or optimising features, every discovery is a step towards creating a seamless and satisfying user experience. Because when we understand the ‘why’ behind user behaviours, we unlock the potential to exceed expectations and build products that users truly love.
Now, the Economic Engine part took me a bit longer to figure out. How can I contribute to a company’s success in a way that is measurable and valued?

User Research
I started looking at user research as a strategic investment in understanding users. Research has an economic impact – by showing how user-centred design decisions lead to higher customer retention rates or reduced customer support costs I can start to quantify the ROI of UX improvements and use that data to advocate for UX investments.
It’s not about delivering a report that will gather dust in the back of a clients server. It’s about using data to make smart decisions that improve user satisfaction, help the client streamline their processes and ultimately boost their bottom line. Whether it’s advocating for a design change that reduces bounce rates or championing a feature that increases conversion, insights are the currency that drives a product’s economic engine forward. Understanding the ‘why’ isn’t just a nice-to-have—it’s the competitive advantage that turns UX research into strategic decisions.
So, next time you hear about the Hedgehog Concept, think about how you can apply it to you, and use it to craft experiences that truly matter.
