Testing and refining concepts before full-scale development is not only essential for creating products that work for you and your users but also for ensuring that efforts are focused on what matters. At hedgehog lab, we’ve seen first-hand what it takes to build the best digital products and honed our User Experience (UX) Design services to ensure that your product ideas are validated through a comprehensive, user-centred approach.
Here’s how UX can help you to get your product off the ground…
User Research
The foundation of building successful products lies in understanding your users. Our design team begins with extensive user research to gather critical insights related to your product concept. This phase may include:
- Engaging with users through interviews, surveys, and other methods to uncover their needs, pain points, and behaviours
- Observing users in their natural environments to understand real-world behaviour, usage patterns and challenges
- Testing of potential solutions through conceptual mockups, sketches, and wireframes to investigate how users relate to your product
During our partnership with the UK’s leading river cruise and tour operator, our team carried out deep research into customer needs and behaviours across the customer lifecycle – providing a robust evidence base to support their digital transformation.

Prototyping
Based on the insights gathered and a deep understanding of the problems to be solved, our team creates initial prototypes of the product experience. These prototypes are interactive and designed to simulate real-world use, allowing users to engage with the product in meaningful and representative ways.
Testing & Iterating
The next step involves rigorous testing of these prototypes with users. This may include moderated usability testing, which facilitates observing user behaviours when interacting with your product, with feedback informing our iterative design process and continual refinement of prototypes – addressing usability issues and enhancing features to better meet user needs.

During our partnership with AJ Bell, our team conducted extensive research into the needs of new retail investors, to iteratively define, design, and evolve their Dodl proposition from discovery through to build, launch, and scale.
Checking Viability & Feasibility
We believe in a collaborative approach. That’s why we embed a cross-functional team at every step of the process; conducting ongoing reviews and workshops that bring together commercial, technical and design teams to steer the product direction. This ensures that our solutions are not only user-centred, but are technically feasible, and well-aligned to your operational and commercial models.
Aligning Understanding
The UX process works best when everyone is enabled to get stuck in. We do this through our transparent and inclusive ways of working that include the whole team from early research, through to testing, design, and strategic planning. We also ensure insights and outcomes from the process are effectively documented and communicated at every step. This is not only important for ensuring alignment on design decisions and the overall product strategy, but key for fostering a shared understanding and direction of activity among all stakeholders.
Remember, the goal is to increase your chance of product success. This means not only building a usable product – one that people can use – but about delivering a compelling experience – one that people will want to use, and that you can provide to them effectively. At hedgehog, we believe this requires that we do not work in a way that reinforces our assumptions, but in a way that purposefully challenges our thinking, and opens our ideas up to being invalidated, too.
Bringing UX into your product development process early ensures your product is based on real user needs, refined through continuous testing, and aligned with business goals and technical capabilities – before committing to build.
By starting with the user and making decisions on insight not assumption, our team enables you to be confident that you’re focusing on solving the right problems, delivers strategic clarity that minimises waste in development, and – ultimately – reduces risk at launch.
