The Lowdown
As the automotive industry transitions towards sustainable transport, Microsoft sought to leverage their HoloLens mixed reality (MR) headset to accelerate this shift. Partnering with hedgehog lab and Zero Carbon Futures, they developed an innovative solution to support the growing electric vehicle maintenance workforce – a critical component in widespread EV adoption.
The Problem
Whilst mixed reality presents enormous potential for training across industries, its application in the automotive sector carries particular significance for sustainability goals. The transition to electric vehicles is crucial for reducing carbon emissions, but this shift requires a skilled workforce capable of maintaining these complex vehicles safely and efficiently.
Through collaborative discovery sessions with Zero Carbon Futures’ Anya Bramich, the team identified a key sustainability challenge: the need to rapidly scale up the EV maintenance workforce whilst reducing the environmental and resource impact of traditional training methods. They focused specifically on fuel cell maintenance, a critical component that directly impacts vehicle efficiency and longevity.
The Solution
Using the Nissan Leaf as their model platform, the team developed a HoloLens training experience that revolutionises how technicians learn to service electric vehicles.

- Improved Repair Quality: Enhanced visualisation and step-by-step guidance helps ensure proper maintenance, extending vehicle lifespan and optimising performance
- Reduced Carbon Footprint: By enabling remote training through mixed reality, the solution eliminates the need for technicians to travel to centralised training facilities
- Resource Conservation: Traditional training often requires multiple physical vehicles and components. The virtual approach minimises the need for physical training resources
The Product
The completed HoloLens experience transforms EV technician training whilst advancing sustainability goals. Users can interact with a life-size Nissan Leaf model through their headset, participating in detailed maintenance scenarios without the environmental impact of traditional training methods.
