There have been considerable changes in this institution over time\u201a across demographics and cultures\u201a but none so great as in recent years. We are currently witnessing drastic changes in dating\u201a due to the widespread adoption of the internet. Now\u201a the mobile revolution and social networking has given thrust to this intimate yet popular practice of choosing an ideal partner. Add to this the rise of new technology such as VR\u201a and the impact in the future could be disruptive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Evolution of Dating<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Rapidly developing technology has played a huge role in the shift of dating trends. New communication technology\u201a such as mobile\u201a internet and text messaging\u201a has enabled dates to be arranged before you\u2019ve even met in person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The concept of online dating has progressed significantly from the anonymous chatrooms of the 1990s to the internet and mobile platforms of today. The first big wave of online dating sites\u201a like OkCupid\u201a Match.com\u201a and eHarmony\u201a required users to spend lots of time on the website answering questions and messaging back and forth. However\u201a the more recent wave of dating apps focus on getting couples offline as quickly as possible.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The future of online dating isn\u2019t necessarily going to be totally offline or online. But online dating today has become smarter and more sophisticated\u201a adding new dimensions to meeting fellow singletons thanks to innovations in technology.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using complex algorithms to match couples has always been the focus of online dating sites such as Match.com and OkCupid. Newer mobile dating sites like Hinge and Tinder\u201a on the other hand\u201a offer a quicker\u201a more efficient sign-up process. In doing so\u201a they have been moving away from questionnaire-fuelled algorithms. But we may not give up on using algorithms altogether. We just have better sources of information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The User Experience<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/images.ctfassets.net\/o6514hijae09\/2t0r6sQPoHGkcbetZk9wte\/f0d7aac928df3eae1849da2f68544373\/dating-appsx3.jpg\" alt=\"[object Object]\" title=\"[object Object]\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We can gauge the popularity of online dating from the stats. One in ten Americans have used an online dating site or mobile dating app; 66% of these users have gone on a date with someone they met through a dating site or app. 23% have met a spouse or long-term partner through these sites.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is believed that the future of online dating will be mobile. A study by online dating website eHarmony found that more than half of their subscribers already use smartphones to access the service. Mobile dating or location-based apps\u201a such as OkCupid or Tinder\u201a have seen their user figures rise exponentially.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/images.ctfassets.net\/o6514hijae09\/47RrSGxBSR1CntHEft6srx\/2763ea431d001744c8fc31aceb6152f1\/dating-app-icons.jpg\" alt=\"[object Object]\" title=\"[object Object]\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>One in ten Americans have used an online dating site or mobile dating app; 66% of these users have gone on a date with someone they met through a dating site or app\u201a and 23% have met a spouse or long term partner through these sites.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Introducing VR<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Technology will advance in leaps and bounds in the coming years\u201a beyond our imagination. Virtual reality not only evokes images and rekindles memories; it can also create new connections and experiences\u201a no matter what our physical status is in real life. In this respect\u201a VR is rapidly improving\u201a and it\u2019s going to transform the most intimate areas of our lives. It can also form the setting for a safe and interactive \u2018first date\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With VR we add a new layer to reality\u201a one where our physical limits fall away. It could help bridge the gap that both elderly men and women face in being closed off from interaction with people their own age\u201a and with younger ages. Wide-angle VR could allow someone to experience new things such as paragliding\u201a as well as reliving memories. As such\u201a it could tie the present fantasy with past reality together\u201a and connect users with others using VR.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As new innovations in technology\u201a such as AI and technologies that convert touch\u201a we have the potential to extend this communication to the most intimate gestures like a hug\u201a kiss and even teledildonics in the not-so-distant future. These may revolutionise relationships\u201a but it\u2019s also worth noting that they could raise moral and psychological issues\u201a by making the most intimate relationships impersonal.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Societies have a regression model where they find a least resistant and self-correcting path\u201a by taking maximum advantage of the tech revolutions.
